The construction industry is a cornerstone of our economy, offering fulfilling careers, strong earning potential, and the opportunity to shape communities.
However, the growing demand for skilled tradespeople has highlighted the need for hands-on education and workforce development. That’s where the Careers in Construction Colorado (CICC) Program steps in—bridging the gap between education and industry by providing students with essential skills, certifications, and pathways to success.
Recognizing the value of this program, the Western Colorado Home Builders Association (HBA) has taken a leadership role in expanding construction education in the region. With a commitment to fostering the next generation of skilled workers, the HBA has launched a local CICC chapter and is actively supporting multiple high schools. This initiative not only equips students with critical trade skills but also ensures a sustainable workforce for the construction industry in Western Colorado.
What is the CICC Program?
The Careers in Construction Colorado program is a non-profit initiative that partners with schools to offer students hands-on training in skilled trades. The program is built around the Home Builders Institute (HBI) Pre-Apprenticeship Certificate Training (PACT) curriculum, which is the nation’s leading career and technical education resource for the building industry.
Through the CICC program, students gain practical experience in trades such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry, landscaping, and HVAC. They also develop essential skills like blueprint reading, construction safety, and professional teamwork.
One of the standout features of this program is its emphasis on industry-recognized certifications. Students who complete the coursework can earn multiple credentials, including:
- HBI PACT Core Certificate
- OSHA-10 Safety Certificate
- Up to 14 Stackable Certifications in Specialized Trades
These certifications not only prepare students for entry-level construction jobs but also set them on a path toward apprenticeships, higher education, or immediate employment in the skilled trades.
Western Colorado HBA’s Commitment to Expanding Construction Education
The HBA has been instrumental in bringing this program to local schools, recognizing the need to provide students with career options outside of traditional four-year college pathways.
Currently, the HBA supports CICC programs at Palisade, Olathe, and Montrose High Schools. And their impact is growing! In the coming year, the program will expand to Grand Junction and Fruita Monument High Schools and The Career Center. By partnering with these schools, the HBA is helping students gain real-world experience and direct connections to the employment opportunities within the construction industry.
Why This Matters for Western Colorado
The benefits of the CICC program go beyond just education—they create opportunities for students while addressing the workforce shortage in the construction industry. By providing a direct pipeline from high school to employment, this initiative helps students graduate with practical skills, job security, and financial independence.
For local builders and contractors, this program ensures a steady flow of well-trained, motivated young professionals ready to enter the workforce. By fostering partnerships between educators and industry leaders, the HBA is actively investing in the region’s future.
Looking Ahead
As the CICC program continues to grow in Western Colorado, the impact on students, schools, and the local economy will be substantial. Thanks to the dedication of the Western Colorado HBA, more students will have access to high-quality construction education, setting them on a path toward rewarding and sustainable careers.
The future of construction starts in the classroom—and thanks to programs like CICC and the efforts of the Western Colorado HBA, that future is looking bright. For more information about how you can support the program contact the HBA office at [email protected].
