Recurring Themes in Design

Modern oak kitchen design with stone backsplash, black granite countertops, and custom cabinetry by Fixture Studio.

As people approach building or renovating their homes in the Grand Valley, we’re seeing a growing number of recurring design themes in Grand Valley homes that reflect both lifestyle and evolving trends. From bold tile patterns to natural materials and warm, moody color palettes, these recurring interior design trends are shaping how homeowners create spaces that feel modern yet timeless. Attending local Parade of Homes events in Grand Junction, St. George, Denver, and Salt Lake continues to inspire both homeowners and designers alike — offering fresh insight into what’s next for Western Colorado home design.

Tile Selections: Bold Patterns and Timeless Style – While the use of tile seems to be timeless in this area, we are seeing more bold textures and patterns being used.  Penny tile, too, is making a big comeback, as well as patterned tile placement on walls and floors. There is also more large format tile being used, creating a unique, sophisticated look.

Colors: Warm and Moody Hues Define 2025 Homes – We are definitely seeing a shift away from cool grays and “all white” anything.  Color palettes are moving to “warm hues” and “moody hues.”  Warm hues see the use of lighter wood floors and creamier tones, while moody hues see the use of dark, rich tones used on walls and ceilings alike.

Natural Materials: A Recurring Interior Design Theme – With the consistent desire to create more and more indoor/outdoor living spaces in this area, we are also seeing more and more natural materials brought indoors. This is not only in stone and wood for walls, floors and ceilings, but also in the material for lighting.

Interior Lighting and Natural Light – With as much sunshine as we get in the valley, we continue to see lots of natural light opportunities in windows, solar tubes, and skylights.  There are many unique and interesting ways to bring light into your homes today, even if it’s not from outside. We are also seeing a much greater use of bold light fixtures and less of a reliance on canned lighting.

Texture, Texture, Texture – There is an obvious shift from neutral, sleek looks to the addition of textures to walls, floors and ceilings. Oversized or large format wainscotting and bold wallpaper patterns are returning for about every size space.  And there are more interesting horizontal and vertical wood slat options appearing in every style home. This trend to texture is also bringing back more carpeting options, especially wool, to “warm up” your rooms.

Bathroom Spa-like Focus – From steam showers and wet rooms to soaking tubs and saunas, primary baths are a reflection of the lifestyle you choose. There is a significant increase in curbless/zero entry showers, as well as more emphasis on unique enclosure options, like window pane shower walls/doors, skylights, or even complete open shower designs.

Flex Spaces – People are moving away from large square footage with single use purposes and focusing on lesser square footage that can serve multiple functions in the present and over time.  That means a better understanding of how you live today AND how you want the spaces to adapt and evolve with you over the years. With the focus on usable space, there is also more attention to detail on smaller things like countertop edges, cabinet and door hardware, and storage spaces.

Kitchens Remain the Gathering Place – Although that’s been true for years now, we are seeing larger islands and even double islands in many open kitchen concepts.  It’s not just about seating, but also counterspace and entertaining, as well as additional storage. Microwaves, ice machines, wine cabinets and warming drawers can also be nicely hidden in islands that create a seamless look and increased functionality in counters/cabinets. Thinking about a butler’s pantry? You may want to put your oven and coffee bar in there instead of the main kitchen.

As always, we want your new home build or renovation to be a reflection of you—your lifestyle, your preferences, and your story. Understanding these recurring design themes in Grand Valley homes helps you make confident decisions that feel authentic and inspired. Our job at Fixture Studio is to help you navigate all the trends and timeless details, so you and your family end up with spaces you absolutely love. When you’re ready to reduce the noise, sleep better at night, and actually enjoy the process, we’re here to help.
